Youth Commission

Congregation Ohev Shalom firmly believes in supporting the youth of our synagogue. Towards this end we offer three groups that serve our youth from fourth to twelfth grade. These groups offer the opportunity for preteens and teens to strengthen their identification with Judaism and with the synagogue, as well as to socialize and interact with their Jewish peers and friends.

USY is the group that serves our high school kids, from ninth to twelfth grades. This group is involved in social action and tikun olam, which literally means “repairing the world.” Our USY group manages to combine these goals with a strong synagogue connection as well as just plain having fun. Their involvement is at the local chapter level, the sub-region level (central Florida or the Mercaz region), the regional level (the southeast or Hanegev region) and the national/international level. USY has monthly programs, inter-chapter activities, seasonal regional and sub-regional conventions and one international convention, this last year held here in Orlando. Our USY advisors are Barbra Resnick and Stacee Fisher and our USY president is Jeremy Attermann.

Our Kadima group serves sixth through eighth graders. They are known as the middle school affiliate of USY. Kadima also has monthly programming, which meets social needs as well as offering cultural and religious connections to the synagogue and community. Kadimaniks participate in inter-chapter events and sub-regional events, including one over-night weekend convention. Our Kadima advisors are Liz Kiefer and Marc Hoffenberg and our Kadima president is Samantha Kaplan.

Olim includes fourth and fifth graders. It is a group that the synagogue offers to fill the social needs of our Sunday/Hebrew school kids. Olim has one program per month, in and out of the synagogue. As with the older groups, Olim includes some focus on tikun olam, and doing mitzvot for others. Our Olim advisor is Ellen Zollman.

Our youth groups are supervised and overseen by Amy Geboff Director of Youth and Family Education for COS. The Youth commission is the synagogue committee that works with the above named professionals in setting policy and allowing for the smooth functioning of our youth groups within the synagogue setting. We are strongly committed to keeping our youth involved in the synagogue and in Jewish life, and to offer them support towards becoming our future Jewish leaders.

Vicki Freed and Janise Klaiman, Youth Committee Co-Chairs
